When the Ground Gave Way
Psalm 40:2 (MEV)
“He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet on a rock, and established my steps.”
True Story
I was barefoot, walking back from my boat. The tide had gone out, and the shoreline was nothing but thick, black mud. Every step, I sank deeper. It was slow, exhausting, and I honestly wasn’t sure I was going to make it out.
But I kept saying one thing: “Help me, Lord.”
And every time I said it—every single time—my next step would land on something solid. Not dry land. Not a miracle escape. Just one firm place to stand, right when I needed it most.
Not before. Not after. Right on time.
Devotion
Sometimes we want God to part the sea. Sometimes we want Him to lift us out entirely.
But sometimes… He just gives you solid ground under a bare foot, one step at a time.
Isaiah 43:2 (MEV) says:
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame kindle upon you.”
Not “if”—but “when.” God doesn’t promise an easy path. He promises to walk it with us.
And if you keep walking—even in weakness—He’ll show up. Not with the whole plan. Not with the full map. But with just enough grace for your next step.
2 Corinthians 12:9 (MEV) reminds us:
“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore most gladly I will boast in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
That’s the good news: you don’t have to be strong. You just have to be His.
Prayer
God, I’m tired. I’m sinking. And I don’t have it in me to fake strength today. I just need You. Give me solid ground for the next step. I don’t need a miracle—I just need You to show up like You always do. One step at a time. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Final Thought
If you feel stuck today, here’s the truth:
The mud is real. But so is the Rock beneath it. Call on Him. And then take the next step.
