Diabetes Deep Dive — Understanding & Reversing Through Food

Understanding and Reversing Diabetes Through Food

Intro

I know this article is a bit different than my other deep dives, But this is an issue that I think hits most families today in one way or another, and I’m not sure that most people understand it fully. So I’m hoping that I can shed a little light to help a few people.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where your body struggles to manage blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is the main source of energy for your cells. Normally, your pancreas releases insulin — a hormone that acts like a “key,” unlocking your cells so glucose can enter and fuel them.

When you have diabetes, one of two problems happens:

  • Type 1 Diabetes: Your body doesn’t make insulin.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: Your body makes insulin, but your cells ignore it (insulin resistance).

Without proper insulin function, sugar stays in the blood instead of being used for energy. That’s why high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) is the hallmark of diabetes.

Levels of Blood Sugar and What They Mean

  • Normal: Fasting blood sugar <100 mg/dL.
  • Prediabetes: 100–125 mg/dL. Warning zone.
  • Diabetes: 126+ mg/dL (fasting) or consistently high after meals.

What happens at these levels?

  • Normal: Energy flows smoothly into your cells.
  • Prediabetes: Extra sugar damages blood vessels silently.
  • Diabetes: Constant high sugar inflames nerves, kidneys, eyes, circulation, and even your brain.

The Link Between Diabetes and Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s is often called “Type 3 Diabetes.” High blood sugar and insulin resistance don’t just hurt your heart — they starve your brain cells and promote plaques that worsen memory loss.

Can Diabetes Be Reversed?

Yes — especially Type 2 diabetes. With lifestyle changes, insulin resistance can be reduced, blood sugar can normalize, and damage can be slowed or even reversed.

How Food Choices Affect Blood Sugar

  1. Refined carbs (white bread, pasta, soda, sweets) → spikes.
  2. Whole foods (veggies, protein, healthy fats) → stable sugar.
  3. Fiber (beans, oats, greens) → slows absorption.
  4. Healthy fats (avocado, nuts, olive oil) → improve response.

The Simple Formula to Reverse It

  1. Cut out sugar and refined carbs.
  2. Eat real, whole foods.
  3. Time your meals (stop constant snacking).
  4. Move after meals.
  5. Stay hydrated.

A1C – The Real Scorecard

A1C shows average blood sugar over 2–3 months.

  • Normal: under 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7–6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5%+

High A1C = ongoing damage to vessels, kidneys, nerves, eyes, brain.

Pills Don’t Fix the Problem

Pills don’t solve insulin resistance. They strain kidneys and liver while allowing the same destructive eating habits to continue. It’s like bailing water without patching the hole.

The Inheritance Myth

You don’t inherit diabetes itself — you inherit the lifestyle that creates it. Break the cycle by changing how you eat and move.

The Fork in the Road

Some accept diabetes and decline slowly. Others wake up when faced with amputation or blindness, change their lifestyle, and reverse their numbers. The choice is yours.

Lifestyle, Not a “Diet”

Change doesn’t mean fad diets or starvation. It means understanding food and building a healthy lifestyle that works for you.

  • What works for one may not work for another — find your fit.
  • Even artificial sweeteners can trigger blood sugar responses.
  • How you eat matters: veggies first, then protein, starch last.
  • Don’t trust labels blindly — some whole grain bread spikes sugar higher than white sugar!

Why Doctors Don’t Tell You This

The medical system profits from prescriptions, not cures. Doctors are paid to manage diabetes, not eliminate it. That means your health is in your hands.

The Hard Truth and the Hope

  • You control what you eat daily.
  • You control whether you move.
  • You control whether diabetes controls you — or you control it.

Diabetes is not inevitable, and it is not permanent.
