The Danger of Pride and Stubbornness
True Story to Begin With
This week’s news reignited debate about Tylenol (acetaminophen) and pregnancy after national remarks linked the medicine to autism. In the heat of reaction, some voices online mocked safety cautions or boasted about taking extra pills as a “protest.” Whatever our politics, the fact remains: acetaminophen overdose can cause severe liver damage, and the warning has been on bottles and FDA pages for years.
Bible Lens
Moments like this reveal a deeper heart issue the Bible warns about: when pride and hatred rule, we stop listening to wisdom. We can reject truth just because we don’t like the person who said it—or because anger feels better than humility.
Proverbs 12:15 (MEV): “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who listens to counsel is wise.”
Proverbs 10:12 (MEV): “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all sins.”
James 4:6 (MEV): “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Proverbs 14:12 (MEV): “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”
John 8:31–32 (MEV): “If you remain in My word, then you are truly My disciples. You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”
What This Means for Us (15–20 minutes total)
1) Truth doesn’t change because we dislike the messenger.
Wisdom asks: “Is it true?” not “Do I like who said it?” Mature believers test everything by Scripture and sound counsel, not by our tribe’s emotions.
2) Pride makes us ignore warning labels—God’s and man’s.
Medicine bottles have warnings; God’s Word has them too. When we ignore either, we’re not being bold—we’re being reckless. Pride says, “I’ll be fine.” Humility says, “I’ll heed the warning.”
3) Humility is the antidote.
Humility listens, slows down, checks sources, and submits to God’s Word. It refuses to let hatred script our decisions. The Holy Spirit forms in us a posture that asks, “Lord, what is wise?” not “How can I own my opponent?”
Heart Check
- Have I ever rejected a hard truth because it came from someone I dislike?
- Where am I ignoring God’s “warning labels” (in His Word, my conscience, or wise counsel)?
- Do I elevate my group’s talking points above Scripture?
Live It This Week
- Practice humility: Before reacting, pray: “Lord, search my heart. Show me truth.” (cf. Ps 139:23–24)
- Slow your scroll: When a headline triggers you, pause. Verify facts. Refuse to share rage.
- Submit to Scripture: Read John 8 daily this week. Ask the Spirit to align your reactions with truth.
- Choose love over contempt: Speak truth without hatred. Correct without humiliating. (Eph 4:15)
Prayer
Lord, deliver us from pride and the blindness of hatred. Teach us to love truth wherever it appears, and to test all things by Your Word. Give us humble, teachable hearts that heed Your warnings and walk in wisdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Scripture: MEV translation.
Health facts (for opening story context): FDA cautions that excessive acetaminophen can cause severe liver damage; labels carry liver warnings; current public debate exists about pregnancy and acetaminophen—seek medical counsel and do not exceed labeled doses.
