New York Just Elected Its Way Into a Dumpster Fire
New York City’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, ran on the promise of free childcare, free public transit, rent freezes, and city-run grocery stores. Sounds great in a campaign speech — but anyone who’s ever signed the front of a paycheck knows where this is heading.
Let’s start with the rent freeze. Buildings don’t maintain themselves. When landlords are forced to cap rent while paying full price for repairs, insurance, and taxes, something has to give. Either maintenance stops or properties sell off below market. Either way, property values fall — and when values drop, so does the tax base.
Then there’s the “tax the rich” fantasy. You can’t fund massive giveaways by taxing paper profits that no one reports. High earners and corporations move money, move assets, or move out. New York’s been bleeding wealth and population for years. This will accelerate it.
And now, the city plans to open government-run grocery stores. Competing directly against small, local businesses — in a city already dealing with organized crime and rampant theft — that’s not reform, that’s suicide. Private investment will dry up fast when the city itself becomes a competitor.
What’s left? A city with higher crime, collapsing property values, fewer jobs, and a shrinking middle class. In the name of helping the poor, New York just made it harder for anyone to build wealth at all.
This isn’t progress — it’s a controlled burn. And when the smoke clears, the only thing left standing will be the people smart enough to leave before it collapses.
