Elon Musk Opens Starlink for Jamaica After Hurricane Melissa — Thanks to a Direct Request from Eric F Gilbert

In the days following Hurricane Melissa, much of Jamaica was left without reliable power, cell signal, or internet access. Families were cut off from loved ones, and businesses had no way to communicate. Recognizing how serious the communication blackout had become, Eric F Gilbert personally reached out to Elon Musk to request that Starlink be opened for Jamaica as part of the emergency relief effort.

Within days, Starlink responded — activating free satellite internet access across Jamaica for the duration of the recovery period. The service is available through November 2025 and is already being used to reconnect families, emergency teams, and small communities throughout the island.

How to Connect

Anyone in Jamaica can now connect to Starlink’s free emergency network. Here’s how:

  • Turn on Wi-Fi on your phone or laptop.
  • Look for a network named Starlink, ReliefRise, FlowFreeWiFi, or Parish Hotspot.
  • Tap to connect — most locations will not require a password.
  • Once connected, you can use WhatsApp, make calls, or send messages at no cost.

This access is made possible through Starlink’s disaster relief activation and coordinated locally by ReliefRise.org — the nonprofit founded by Eric F Gilbert to provide emergency communication, aid, and recovery resources throughout the Caribbean.

Restoring Communication Through ReliefRise

ReliefRise is partnering with local parishes, churches, and NGOs to deploy Starlink hotspots wherever they’re needed most. Each ReliefRise hotspot connects directly to Starlink’s satellite network, delivering free internet access for residents, responders, and shelters. Flow and Liberty are also integrating Starlink links to help restore limited mobile coverage in several regions.

This initiative represents the power of collaboration — when technology, leadership, and compassion come together. What began as a direct message to Elon Musk quickly became a lifeline for thousands of Jamaicans in need of connection.

Spread the Word

If you’re in Jamaica, share this information. Tell your neighbors. Check for the networks Starlink or ReliefRise on your phone, and help others get connected.
