The Sovereign Backstop

Finding Security in the Midst of Global Crisis

My friends, we have seen something remarkable happen in the Middle East this month. When the Strait of Hormuz became a flashpoint of conflict, the world’s financial systems did what they often do when things get difficult: they retreated. Lloyd’s of London and the global insurers, driven by a spirit of fear and risk assessment, effectively pulled the plug. They refused to insure the very ships that carry the lifeblood of the global economy. They said, “The risk is too high. You are on your own.”

But then, we saw a move of bold, decisive leadership. President Trump stepped in and said that if the private markets wouldn’t provide the “cover,” the United States would. By utilizing the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to create a $20 billion sovereign insurance facility—and doing so at rates that undercut the retreating London markets—he didn’t just clear the path for commerce; he secured a long-term position of strength for this nation. He saw a crisis and turned it into a “revenue stream” for the future.

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.”
— Proverbs 8:12 (MEV)

Now, I want you to think about your own life for a moment. Have you ever felt “uninsurable”? Perhaps your health has taken a turn, or your finances are in a shambles, and the world’s systems are telling you that you’re too big of a risk. You look at the “Strait” you have to pass through, and the voices of fear are shouting that you won’t make it to the other side.

God is looking for people who will trust His Sovereign Backstop. You see, God’s wisdom is not like the world’s wisdom. The world looks at a crisis and sees a reason to retreat; God looks at a crisis and sees an opportunity to demonstrate His power and provide a way where there was no way. When the President stepped in, he was operating on a principle of providence—providing what was necessary for the journey to continue.

“But as for you, you intended evil against me, but God intended it for good, to bring it to pass, as it is this day, to save many people alive.”
— Genesis 50:20 (MEV)

There is a strategic beauty in how God works. Just as that insurance move created a new “revenue stream” from what was meant to be a disaster, God wants to take the very thing the enemy intended for your destruction and turn it into a source of spiritual wealth. Your greatest trial can become the “revenue stream” of your testimony. Your deepest valley can become the place where you learn the secret of God’s sufficiency.

But you must decide: will you stay anchored in the harbor of fear, or will you sail under the Covering of the Almighty? The “rates” of God’s grace are far better than anything the world offers—in fact, the premium was already paid in full at Calvary. You don’t have to earn His protection; you simply have to accept His terms and follow His lead.

As you go about your day, remember this: The same God who declares the end from the beginning is the One who is navigating your ship. He isn’t surprised by the storms in the Strait of Hormuz, and He isn’t surprised by the storm in your kitchen or your office. He is a Sovereign God, and He has provided the ultimate insurance policy for your soul through Jesus Christ.

“Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.'”
— Isaiah 46:10 (MEV)

Trust Him today. Don’t look at the waves; look at the One who has promised to bring you safely to the other side. He is your Backstop, your Provider, and your King.

God bless you, and keep looking up!
